Changing and reloading of speed cameras

The utilising of radar apparatus in fixed poles on the motorway still demands activities from police officers on the spot. The changing of cassettes and altering the direction of the camera takes place several times a week and sometimes daily. Often there are more poles with camera boxes placed, whilst less cameras are inserted.

Using a rotation system and changing the pattern the location of the cameras is frequently changed, so those drivers who regularly pass by don’t know if the camera is in use at that moment. Due to this he will always reduce his speed.

The changing of the camera or the film cassette requires the necessary precautionary measures. The photograph below shows how, with the Cupertino of the road department, one lane can be closed to allow the police officer to do his work in safety. It is visible to drivers passing by.

The changing of a film cassette at each location takes approximately 3 to 5 minutes. Each cassette contains a film of roughly 30 metres with approximately 800 photos of speeding offences.

The police officers standing here are in telephone contact with the road department in the central room. The speed limit, during the changing of camera or film, is reduced from 100 km per hour to 70 km per hour.

This takes about 5 minutes. This is done using the so-called "arrow-cross" system, which closes the left lane to traffic
